Portrait of a Thoroughbred
by Wayne Simmons
beautiful bird dog has always taken my eye, and the sight of one usually inspires a desire in me to paint it. And so it was not long ago, while thumbing through an old issue of PDJ, that I came across such an image. It was a snapshot taken by Bruce Jacobs of one of the many fine, quality pointing dogs he has trained over the years. Of course, the dog that inspired Portrait of a Thoroughbred was not just any dog, but actually a royal princess, and heir to an important legacy. Her name was Rail’s Princess, an incredibly beautiful seven-time Champion and daughter to perhaps the finest pointing dog that ever lived, the incomparable Guard Rail.
